Appearance & Size
Neon Blue Rams develop bright, almost neon blue hues across their body and fins, often with yellow/orange highlights and a red eye. Males typically have more intense colours and slightly more pointed fin extensions; females may display softer tones and sometimes a pinkish belly when ready to spawn. Fully grown, they usually reach around 5-7 cm in length.
Temperament & Compatibility
These Rams are peaceful, curious, and make great additions to community tanks. They are not aggressive by nature, though during breeding they can become territorial of their nesting site. Ideal tankmates are other calm, similarly sized fish that tolerate warm water. Avoid large aggressive species.
Water & Tank Requirements
Temperature: Prefers higher tropical temps, around 25-29 °C (≈ 78-85 °F). Stability is key.
pH & Hardness: Slightly acidic to neutral pH ~ 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water.
Tank size: A minimum of about 75 litres (≈ 20 gallons) is recommended for one pair, more if you want other inhabitants or several Rams. Provide plenty of plants, hiding spots, subdued lighting or cover, and smooth substrate.
Diet & Care
Neon Blue Rams are omnivores. They do well with a varied diet of quality flakes or pellets, plus regular live or frozen treats such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, or daphnia. Feed small amounts a couple of times per day to avoid water quality issues. Maintain excellent water quality with regular water changes; these fish are sensitive to poor conditions.
Lifespan
With proper care, Neon Blue Rams typically live about 3-4 years. Their lifespan depends heavily on stable conditions — temperature, water chemistry, diet, and tank environment all play big roles.
