Iron is essential for aquatic plants, playing a crucial role in chlorophyll production. A deficiency shows up first in young leaves, causing them to yellow and become stunted. Iron in plants cannot be moved from older to newer leaves, making it vital to provide a consistent supply.

When selecting an iron supplement, understanding its form is crucial. Ferrous iron (+2 charge) is water-soluble at any pH and is the preferred form. Ferric iron (+3 charge) is only soluble below a pH of 5.5, and in higher pH levels, it precipitates and becomes inaccessible to plants.

To address this, many products use iron-EDTA, which, while keeping iron soluble, has drawbacks. Iron-EDTA bonds too strongly, making iron less available to plants and requiring them to expend energy to convert it.
