The Green Neon Tetra is a dazzling freshwater fish that brings a vibrant touch to any aquarium. Native to the slow-moving blackwater rivers of South America, particularly in the Rio Negro basin, this species is a smaller, more delicate cousin of the classic Neon Tetra, known for its iridescent green-blue stripe.
Green Neon Tetras feature a brilliant green iridescent stripe that runs along their slim, streamlined body, creating a stunning effect under aquarium lighting. Their lower body has a subtle red hue, though less prominent than other tetra species. Growing to a modest size of 2.5-3.5 cm, these fish are ideal for nano and community aquariums.
Green Neon Tetras thrive in tanks of at least 40 litres, with soft, acidic water conditions to mimic their natural habitat. Maintain a pH range of 5.0 to 6.5 and a temperature between 23°C and 27°C. A densely planted tank with subdued lighting and dark substrate enhances their vibrant colours while providing hiding spots to reduce stress. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential for their health.
These peaceful schooling fish should be kept in groups of 8-10 to encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress. They pair well with other small, non-aggressive species, such as rasboras, Corydoras catfish, dwarf gouramis, and shrimp. Avoid housing them with larger or predatory fish that may harm or intimidate them.
Green Neon Tetras are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. Offer high-quality micro pellets or flakes as a staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Occasionally, include plant-based foods like spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables for balanced nutrition. Feed them 2-3 times daily in small portions.
With proper care, Green Neon Tetras can live up to 4-5 years, bringing activity and vibrant colours to your aquarium.
